Tutu Hoopwire Dye Rack

(hooping & connector in image not included)

One of the outstanding features of "Hoopwire"  is the ability to dye it using common fabric dyes, allowing you to color match the wire with the rest of your garment or costume. Our  custom made dye rack makes coloring your wire a fast and simple task.

Made from 18-8 stainless steel, the dye rack allows the wire to be safely and securely submerged into a hot pot, and easily retrieved. Because of the “springy” nature of the wire, the dye rack is the safest and simplest way to dye your hoop wire.

NO SPLASHING, NO MESS! NO SPRINGY HOOP WIRE COMING LOOSE IN A HOT DYE BATH.

Here’s How To Do It: Starting from the center, coil the springy hoop wire in the dye rack and place it in your dye bath for even dyeing. The hoop wire will be held securely in place while it is in the dye bath and being rinsed. Use stainless steel tongs to safely transfer the dye rack in to and out of the dye bath.

The hoop wire can be dyed using a general all purpose union dye, such as Rit Dye, or acid dyes.

Follow all safety and usage instructions on the dye packaging and website.

We use an electric skillet but you can also use a burner on your stove or outdoor grill.

  • TEST!!  Cut a small piece of hoop wire to test the amount of time it will take to get the desired result.
  • Wipe hoop wire clean to remove any dirt.  Acetone is a good cleaner.
  • Thread hoop wire on a dye rack.  Dye racks are now available for purchase on www.HoopWire.com.
  • Use enough water so that the hoop wire is completely immersed and allow for evaporation.
  • Heat the water to the desired temperature.  Most Acid dyes can be maintained between 180 and 210F for best results.
  • Add dye and acid (white vinegar or citric acid) according to package directions. Stir. If using a powdered dye, make sure it is completely dissolved.
  • Add hoop wire so that the dye bath flows freely around all surfaces.
  • Process the hoop wire until it reaches the desired color.  Acid dyes are best for dark colors.  Rit Dye does not work for black.
  • Remove the hoop wire from the dye bath and rinse in an ice bath or cold water.
